Bottled Water
Safe Handling Tips

Proper handling procedures of bottled water will ensure that your water cooler will continue to offer you the benefits of clean safe water for years to come.

The Brookhaven National Laboratory, whose research includes the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, has developed the following principles for the safe handling and storage of bottled water that are appropriate not only in the laboratory setting, but also for the home or office.

  • Always store bottled water inside in a clean, cool, dry and well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store water bottles in the same area as cleaners, paint, or other chemicals.
  • Avoid storing water in direct sunlight or above room temperature.
  • Do not store water for more than 30 days, or past the expiration date on the bottle.
  • Never use bottled water to clean contact lenses.
  • Do not use bottled water for babies or infants.
  • Do not use bottled water if you have an immune deficiency.
  • Always wash your hands before handling water bottles or water coolers.
  • Never touch the end of the spigot of the water cooler with your hands or anything that has come into
  • contact with your mouth, such as glasses, cups, or refillable water bottles.

Following these principles will help you maintain your health and the health of your family or co-workers and assure years of service from your water cooler.
